Hercules A (3C 348) hosts a black hole of several billions solar masses and exhibits huge relativistic jets extending over more than a million light years. Such objects are studied by the research unit FOR5195 from an observational perspective (right) and also from theoretical side (left).

Good times for AGN-jet research!
Our research unit has been granted funding for phase 2. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) – German Research Foundation has announced today, that all our requested projects will be funded from 2026 until 2030. We are very grateful to the DFG for acknowledging the quality and relevance of our scientific work and recognising the merits of fruitful cooperation.

Highly motivated, we can now go on to search for answers about fundamental questions related to relativistic jets. These are powerful outflows of radiation and plasma emanating from spinning black holes in the centres of galaxies. With our findings from phase 1, “we have laid the foundation for new, even more ambitious goals” says our spokesperson Matthias Kadler. In phase 2 we will pursue questions on three main research areas:
1. Formation of relativistic jets near supermassive black holes
2. Jet composition and radiation processes
3. Feedback of jets on the host galaxy or cluster

DFG research units are a key measure of German funding of research. They enable researchers to collaborate on complex scientific topics. Our research unit FOR5195 brings together numerous leading scientists from Germany and European partner groups. It is coordinated from the Julius‑Maximilians‑Universität Würzburg (JMU) and lead by Matthias Kadler.

We are very thankful to all our members, science partners and supporters!
