{"id":1334,"date":"2024-05-14T11:37:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T10:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/?page_id=1334"},"modified":"2026-03-27T19:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T18:30:29","slug":"science-highlights","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/science-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Selected milestones of the research unit&#8217;s activities are shown here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>02.02.2026: New results presented by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration provide significant new insights about the mystery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/probing-the-birthplace-of-relativistic-jets\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2440\">launching region and formation mechanism<\/a> of AGN jets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>29.01.2026: Via simulating the disk-jet coupling in M 87, we could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/research-unit-scientists-explain-puzzling-difference-in-black-hole-images\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2656\">explain the different appearance<\/a> of the black-hole shadow at two radio frequencies 86 GHz and 230 GHz. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18.12.2025: Dr. Sarah Wagner has successfully defended her PhD thesis on stochastic variability and gravitational echoes of gamma-ray blazars, in particular PKS 1830-211. As postdoc, Dr. Wagner will contribute to P3 and P5 as an associated researcher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>07.10.2025: We have published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/poster-exhibition\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2238\">exciting poster exhibition<\/a>, illustrating our scientific agenda and research highlights from the first funding period, as well as our goals and plans for the next years. We show the posters that we have compiled for the past DFG review-panel visit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18.12.2024: Research-unit scientists lead by Anne-Kathrin Baczko have significantly contributed to an unprecedented detection and dissection of the very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/the-centre-and-sub-parsec-jet-of-ngc-1052\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1785\">nucleus and the sub-parsec-scale jet of NGC 1052<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21.08.2024: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/karl-schwarzschild-medal-awarded-to-anton-zensus\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1376\">Karl Schwarzschild Medal 2024<\/a> is awarded to Prof. Anton Zensus. Congratulations to this significant distinction!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12.04.2024: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/innovation-prize-awarded-to-thomas-dauser\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1345\">Innovation Prize<\/a> of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society was awarded to Dr. Thomas Dauser and collaborators. Congratulations to this honouring!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20.03.2024: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/hrishikesh-shetgaonkar-selected-as-manohar-parrikar-scholar\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1315\">Hrishikesh Shetgaonkar was awarded<\/a> with the prestigious Manohar Parrikar Goa Scholarship. Congratulations to this prize!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>19.01.2024: Members of our research unit have contributed to a second and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/confirmation-of-the-black-hole-shadow-of-messier-87\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1020\">confirming depiction<\/a> of the shadow of the central supermassive black hole in the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 87.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16.10.2023: Dr. Luca Ricci has successfully defended his PhD thesis about radio observations of the acceleration and collimation zone of NGC 315 and constraints on its magnetic-field properties. As postdoctoral researcher in P1, Dr. Ricci will detail this work on the launching and propagation of small-scale jets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>27.07.2023: Our research unit member Prof. Dr. J. Anton Zensus was awarded with the <a href=\"https:\/\/eas.unige.ch\/tycho_brahe_medal.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tycho-Brahe medal<\/a>. Congratulations to this honour!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12.10.2022: Dr. Christoph Wendel has successfully defended his PhD thesis about the explanation of narrow spectral features in the SEDs of Mrk 501 and 3C 279 through radiation reprocessing via IC-pair cascades. As postdoc, Dr. Wendel will contribute to P5 and act as research-unit coordinator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12.05.2022: The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) reveals the first image of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.for5195.uni-wuerzburg.de\/index.php\/the-milky-ways-central-supermassive-black-hole\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"305\">black hole at the centre of our galaxy<\/a>.
